A general medicine nurse is a registered nurse (RN) working in medical wards normally in an acute hospital environment. General medicine nurses will assist doctors with physical examinations and care plans, perform assessments of the patient’s conditions, keep the patients family updated and informed of what is happening with the patient. Other duties of a general medicine nurse will include taking patients temperatures, checking of blood pressure and pulse rates, administrating medications, taking blood samples setting up drips and using various types of medical equipment. All general medicine nurses will be a crucial part of a multi-disciplinary team, working with doctors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, healthcare assistants and others. As an agency general medicine nurse you will get a variety of experience working as a generalist and have opportunities to experience different specialities or wards.
A general medicine nurse must be a registered nurse with the UK NMC. Educational requirements may depend on the healthcare facility, its size, and location. Entry-level requirements for general medical nursing include nursing experience and a nursing qualification recognised by the UK NMC.
